Meeting a new support worker is a chance to explain what matters to you and ask questions. A few notes can help you prepare for your first disability support visit, whether support happens at home or in the community.

1. Choose your starting point

First, write down two or three things you would like support with. These might include preparing a meal, managing household tasks or attending a community activity. Explain what you enjoy doing yourself and where you would like assistance.

2. Explain how you communicate

Tell the provider what helps you understand information and express your choices. For example, you might prefer short explanations, written notes, pictures, an interpreter or extra time to respond. If you wish, invite a trusted person to join the conversation.

3. Check the practical details

Next, confirm who is coming, the time, location and length of the visit. Ask how to contact the provider if plans change. Before agreeing to services, make sure you understand the proposed supports, prices, any travel charges and cancellation arrangements. Ask for explanations in a format that works for you.

4. Talk about preferences and safety

Share relevant routines, cultural preferences and personal boundaries. Also, discuss access needs and agreed support or safety plans that the worker needs to follow. Ask how the provider stores your information and who may receive it. Share personal documents through an agreed private channel, rather than public comments.

5. Agree on a check-in

Finally, talk about what worked and anything you would like done differently. Agree on the next steps and who to contact if you have a concern. Keep a short note for yourself if useful.

Your choices should be part of the conversation from the start.
